Compatibility of PTVR with Quest headsets.

  • Compatibles headsets:

From May 2025, in addition to HTC Vive Pro headsets ( see previous section for details), PTVR is also compatible and tested with Metaquest 1, 2 and 3 !

This increased compatibility is possible thanks to OpenXR !

Given this larger number of compatible headsets, we now need beta testers more than ever, so your help is welcome if some bugs appear.

Note: a PC with the label VR READY is recommended for the longevity of the PC updates.

A/ Setup without any consideration of PTVR

The two following steps are only given here as a gross plan to follow. They have nothing to do with PTVR and should be achieved thanks to the instructions of the meta quest website (https://www.meta.com/)

1/ Create a facebook account

2/ Install 'Meta Quest Link' application

Try and type 'install the Meta Quest Link app' in your browser. and you should be directed to the meta quest website) on a page containing the part shown in figure 1 below.

Figure 1

Click on the 'Download app' button.

And follow the instructions.

If you encounter problems, look for helpful information and assistance on the meta quest website).

If setup is correct, you should be able to see the following:

  • in the headset (on 30th april 2025), you should see a Science Fiction city (see figure 2). This is similar to the Steam waiting room.

Figure 2

  • on your PC, in the 'Meta Quest Link' application, in the 'Devices' tab, you should see the screen shown in Figure 3:

    Figure 3

Note 1: You can ignore the top message in the blue ribbon if you know that your computer is "VR Ready".

Note 2: You will need to buy a cable for connecting the headset to the PC click here for instance

3/ Troubleshooting : some hints

For issues related to the connexion of the PC with the headset, explore the following:
In the the 'Meta Quest Link' application (see Figure 3):
Clicking on the area containing the headset will open a vertical menu on the right (figure 4) Figure 4

You can then scroll down the vertical menu, and click on different buttons. The 'Device setup' button for instance allows you to choose between a connexion with or without a cable (between the headset and the PC).

B/ Setup : specific points for PTVR compatibility

1/ Let PTVR be an accepted "source"

In the the 'Meta Quest Link' application -> TAB 'Settings' -> TAB 'General' :
Activate 'Unkwnown sources' (see figure 5)

Figure 5

2/ OpenXR active

In the 'Meta Quest Link' application -> TAB 'Settings' -> TAB 'General' :
Check that the message 'Meta Quest Link is set as the active OpenXR runtime' is displayed below 'OpenXR Runtime' (as in Figure 5). If not click on the button on the right of 'OpenXR Runtime'.

En français: Paramètres -> Général -> “Définir Meta Quest Link comme l’exécution OpenXR active”.

3/ Beta Mode -> Public Test Channel

In the 'Meta Quest Link' application -> TAB 'Settings' -> TAB 'Beta' :
Activate the 'Public Test Channel' (see Figure 6).

Figure 6

There are multiple reasons to activate the 'Public Test Channel' mode.
One reason is to allow a refresh rate of 120 HZ, an option which is not proposed on some PCs if this mode is deactivated.

4/ Run your PTVR script !

Once the above instructions in B/ section have been followed, all PTVR scripts will run immediately except for the scripts that make use of handcontroller pointing. In this latter case, you will have to modify one line of code in your script to tell PTVR the name of your headset's manufacturer, namely "Vive" (for the HTC Vive pro series) or "Oculus" (for the quest 1, 2 or 3 metaquest).
This simple and single modification is described in the pointing section of the user manual (basics).

If you forget to modify your code, do not worry, an error message will appear in your headset.

5/ Nota Bene : BEWARE !

If you use an HTC Vive Pro headset AFTER having used the Quest, you might encounter problems. IN this case, try the following :
go in the Steam VR application -> Steam VR Settings -> OpenXR TAB and check that OpenXR is active.
